8 Different Types of Wrinkles & Their Treatments

Posted on: May 31, 2023 by Brian Ecclefield

It’s natural for skin to develop wrinkles with age. Wrinkles are lines or creases that appear on skin due to the loss of elasticity and collagen. As all skincare companies know, not all wrinkles are the same. Addressing them requires a different approach depending on the type of wrinkles and the reason they formed. In this article, we will discuss the 8 different types of wrinkles, how to address them, and the responsibility of skincare manufacturers to stand by their claims.
  • Dynamic Wrinkles
These are caused by repetitive facial movements, such as smiling, frowning, and squinting. They are usually seen around the eyes, forehead, and mouth. Botox injections are an effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles as they relax the muscles responsible for creating these wrinkles.
  • Static Wrinkles
These are visible even when the face is at rest. Static wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin. They are typically found on the cheeks, neck, and hands. Dermal fillers are a viable treatment option for static wrinkles as they add volume to the skin, making it appear plumper and more youthful.
  • Gravitational Wrinkles
As the name suggests, this type of wrinkle is caused by gravity and the natural aging process, leading to sagging skin. These wrinkles are commonly seen around the neck, jowls, and cheeks. Surgical facelifts or non-surgical facelifts, like Ultherapy, are the most effective treatments for gravitational wrinkles.
  • Dehydration Wrinkles
These wrinkles are caused by the skin's lack of moisture, which can be due to environmental factors, such as dry air or excessive sun exposure. A good moisturizer with validated anti-aging claims may help prevent these wrinkles from forming in the first place. Additionally, drinking plenty of water can help to prevent and reduce dehydration wrinkles.
  • Compression Wrinkles
These wrinkles are caused by external factors like sleeping on one’s side. Silk pillowcases and avoiding sleeping on your side or stomach may help prevent these wrinkles.
  • Photoaging Wrinkles
These wrinkles are caused by long-term sun exposure, leading to premature aging. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and avoiding excessive sun exposure can prevent photoaging wrinkles.
  • Atrophic Wrinkles
These are caused by a loss of fat and collagen in the skin, which may lead to a thin, crepey appearance. Fractional CO2 laser treatments or PRP therapy can help improve the appearance of atrophic wrinkles.
  • Smoking Wrinkles
Smoking accelerates the aging process and can cause wrinkles around the mouth and eyes. Quitting smoking can prevent further damage and using topical retinoids may help to reduce the appearance of smoking wrinkles.

Anti-Aging Claim

Validated Claim Support helps companies with anti-aging claim substantiation by designing clinical trials that are specifically tailored to anti-aging products. These trials can assess the efficacy of the product in reducing signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.
Additionally, we help identify appropriate biomarkers that can be used to measure the efficacy of anti-aging products. For example, we can help identify specific proteins, such as collagen or elastin, that are associated with youthful-looking skin. By using appropriate biomarkers, consumers have access to more accurate and reliable data as it pertains to the efficacy of anti-aging products.
